At last, I can stop calling it Playstation Motion Controller, the ice cream cone of a controller has a name, Move. Announced on stage at Sony’s Press conference at the Games Developers Conference happening in San Francisco right about now, it gave us some details on what the controller is going to be used for, how it works and how we can get it.
The controller itself has a glowing cone at the top, with the four usual dualshock face buttons and an “action button” in the middle of these, with a start and select button on the sides of the controller, as well as an extra trigger on the underside. That’s pretty much what I’ve been able to gauge from staring a screen shots.
These people are seriously into moving about with move
So, first of all, I may as well tell you what variety of expensive packages you are going to be able to get “Move” in. There will be:
- For people who already own the Playstation Eye Camera, a Controller only pack
- A Playstation Move Starter Kit, which is the controller, a Playstation Eye and a game
- The PS3 bundle, which is starter kit with the addition of a Playstation 3
With regards to pricing, it’s going to be around £70 for the starter kit, though that could rise, as dollar conversion rates can’t be trusted at the moment, but as well as all of that, there is going to be what is, basically a “Nunchuck” you will be able to get. This ‘sub controller’ will act as though you’ve got a DualShock, only it’s been split in half, with a analog stick and some more face buttons
Of course, if you’re going to be spending this cash on the controller, you need to know the games which the controller will work with. First up is “Sports Champions”, which will be essentially a mini-game collection. It’ll map, for example a table tennis bat, onto your virtual hand, with the camera tracking depth as well as other positioning.
There will also be ‘Move Party’ another, more EyeToy style, game collection, with you appearing on screen, thanks to the camera, and doing all kinds of crazy games. Others include “Motion Fighters”, a behind the back fighting game, compatibility with LittleBigPlanet, allowing you to interact with things using the controller, “The Shoot”, an, erm, shooting game, SOCOM 4 will have compatibilty, as well as a bunch of others, some unnanounced.
Possibly the more interesting things about the Playstation Move, which are not exactly apparent, is the technology behind it, more importantly the PS Eye camera. Whilst this tech has been around for a while, we’ve not actually seen any of it used effectively, but the camera will be able to, as I mentioned before, use the Move controller as a reference point, allowing it to attach items to replace the controller in the video feed of you in game. It can also track your facial features as more reference points, allowing greater depth. But, all this stuff sounds crazy, so I’ll end on a video which will give a better idea of what the Move can do.
Check out some images of the games below:

Here is "The Shoot", a shooting game, apparently the lag is only supposed to be the same as the normal controllers, very small.
If we haven't bored you, here is some more:

- Awful US Heavy Rain Box art, Sony Respond
- Kinect: First Gameplay Footage
- Playstation Phone on the way?

looks like a nice tool for table tennis, but I’d still prefer a paddle-like tool for the game.
