I saw this and how could I not post this as video of the day. Seriously, if you had seen this, and happened to have the ability to post this on this here website, wouldn’t you? Oh. Well, it’s another trailer for the cancelled, much maligned Duke Nukem Forever. And man I wish I could play this.
No, it doesn’t look visually impressive, but the level of interaction looks awesome. However, it’s very generic, despite the different environments that have been used and enemies, it was just never going to be realistic for a game that was started in 1997 to stand up to one where the developers can pull a game out within two years.
I’m really interested in seeing how the rest of this saga pans out, what actually went on at 3D realms towards the end of the development, how the different versions of DNF panned out, over three different engines and essentially why things went so wrong. Anyway, the video above has a flying octopus, so enjoy!
Today’s video of the day is this trailer for Super Mario Galaxy 2, fresh from Nintendo’s US Media Summit. The game is set to release in North American on the 23rd of May and going off this trailer you can expect much of the same as the original (i.e. running around tiny planets and between platforms in space). Perhaps the most exciting bit to any Mario fan is getting to see a bit of Yoshi action, who is apparently the next word in intergalactic space travel.
I played the first Red Steel on the Wii. It sucked. Sure, the idea of using a gun and a sword at the same time sounded awesome, but in practice, with the stodgy control schemes that didn’t quite work, it was like you were hobbling around, trying to miss every bad guy that game near. It was the game that, perhaps proved, that Wii technology just wasn’t accurate enough back at launch.
The original’s failure hasn’t stopped them from wanting to put out another, so here is a clip of Red Steel 2. Taking a more stylised graphical approach, it first of all seems to be a little bit easier on the eyes than the first and also more varied, with different environments (shouldn’t be praise, but again, play the first game). From this clip it also appears to not try and be anything it’s not i.e. super serious, as a dude with a samurai sword in one hand and a variety of gun in another isn’t going to be sensible picking headshots.
The big game breaker (literally) with this, is the control. If it is a little bit better than the last one, that won’t do. It needs to utilise the wii motion plus, allow as close as 1:1 motion as it allows and most important, make you forget you’re using a mote and the nunchuck and just have fun. Let us hope Ubisoft learnt their lesson…
Today’s Video of the Day is a launch trailer for AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! — A Reckless Disregard for Gravity, a game based on a simple concept, skydiving and making a crowd feel good. If Mirror’s Edge made you sick, it’s probably best not to watch the above video.
You basically are a skydiver who goes through a Tron esque world and aim to get as many hugs and kisses as possible, and if you collide with a model, things are good and get better by performing stunts, which vary from going through tight spots to giving protesters an obscene gesture. You can order the game here, which is far easier than getting it from a shop, it can’t be that easy to ask.
If you’ve read my preview, you’ll notice I talk quite a bit about how easy it is to die/fail at Battlefield: Bad Company 2′s multiplayer demo. Now, if I’m going to be a idiot about it, I’d blame it on the game, so to cut out that problem, DICE have released this ‘How to Play’ video, all about what to do depending on your site, how to ensure your team wins and the effectivness of classes and vehicles. Take a look, and maybe even download and play the demo yourself!
I love odd Japanese games, moreso than I do more conventional ones and almost as much as my love for out of date unplayable rubbish. So Tomena Sanner is right up my street with it’s silly rhythm action/Quick action event things. It has break-dancing businessmen, lolita, giraffe suites and is a bit of a fun assault on the mind.
I’ve embedded some footage of the Japanese version above and invite you to try and work it out, as the localised version makes little sense either. Although we all have a affinity with moonwalking space men.
Apparently, there was a 2004 game on the Xbox/PS2/GBA called Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball. I’ve never played it, nor heard anything about it, but when there are games that simulate shooting dudes with real bullets and not paint canisters, I think I know which one I’d pick. So, I’m going to take a wild guess and say it probably wasn’t a commericial or critical hit.
However, that just doesn’t stop some people, so publisher Majesco are bringing out, wait for this now, Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball 2, for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. Little information of this hot new release is availible of yet, other than it’s been published, according to Destructoid, by Space X Studios, who have made a photo safari thing for PC, and some other screensaver thing…
We also know that it’s going to have a ‘Cheat meter’ allowing you to ‘wipe’ out fellow paintballers before getting caught. Now, I myself ain’t too ‘up’ on this whole Paintball Tourney, but it’s going to help me by having both single and multiplayer modes based in real life paintball fields, should give me the tactical advantage, should I ever find myself in one.
In honour of this announcement, video of the day is a video, remarkably difficult to find in fact, of the first game. If you are watching the video I posted above (apologies for it not being a direct stream, I just couldn’t find one)…HOW HUGE IS THAT GUN! And are those goggles or a face mask? Then what is gun doing supported by your ears? AND why did they get the voice from the first Dance Dance Revolution game to say something of which I don’t know. Are real paint ball tournaments truly like this? Do you float over a strange oppressant mud colour, accompanied by a soundtrack more suited to a faulty arcade machine? And why have you come to a paintball match in stone wash jeans and a bomber jacket? Though don’t fret, realism is most defintely catered for in the form of TIPPMANN, “Manufacturer of the 98 Custom, A-5, and the new X7 paintball guns”. Though my final question is, why in all of paintballing are they making another?
So many, many questions.
I’d never thought I would be writing that there is a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog game coming out. At last. Maybe. Just maybe, we’ll get a true sequal to the original three, three games that have been replayed many a time by myself and countless others, who just keep gazing at the Sonic the Hedgehog 1 level select Cheat screen, marvelling out how well designed and classic the stages were, and still are…
Oh poor Duke Nukem Forever. In development for what seems like centuries, countless different game engines and builds, none of which we ever really go to play. Maybe the enthusism for this series is fueled purely by the massive hype and inevitable fail of its development cycle.
After we were told that it was never going to be making its way for release, I guessed that we may well see a whole lot of screens, footage, design documents and all the rest of the stuff you’d probably of been able to unlock as extras had the game ever being released. Some more footage has found its way onto youtube, which will soon become the Duke Nukem Forever vault, and here it is. Nothing new is really seen, Duke kicks ass in a dirty underground environment. But it’s DUKE!
However, before you press play and I hope you haven’t already, it may be an idea to turn the volume down, prefrably muted as the music that has been dubbed over the top should really carry a health warning. Next time I write about this game, I hope to be able to tell you that all the versions have been released for free on a website. I wish.
It’s been talked about for quite a while, if nothing definite, about “The Secret World” a post-apocolyptic MMO. It’s all based on some horror based conspiracy.
Whilst many of the facts are unknown at the moment, we can gleam a few things from the trailer. Firstly, there are the undead, which is kind of the usual for post-apocalyptic games such as these. And that’s about it. I did notice something which could indicate where some of the inspiration of the game is coming from. One of the sign posts points towards “Lovecraft Lane” which I reckon has something to do with H.P Lovecraft, of Cthulhu fame. Either way, this sets the scene for what could be a novel concept for a MMO.
